Biography

Lisa-Marie Ryan is a contemporary fine artist and photographer who is based in both York and London.

I document the exposed and concealed private experiences of my life, society and culture. I use installation and photography as an attempt “to provide photographic evidence of my own existence” [Sophie Calle] to prove I existed and this is what happened.
I enjoy obscuring the truth, manipulating perceptions and the act of destruction. I generally work from these ideas combined with a concept (social, personal, cultural) however the idea normally transforms itself beyond its initial intention thus the initial intention can become hidden. It may be easy to interpret or it may be difficult, it doesn’t matter. I don’t mind if people don’t interpret it the way I intended; only that it makes sense in their own minds and that pleasure and satisfaction are felt in trying to unfold its meaning. You could say that that is the ultimate motivation for the art that I produce.
A reoccurring theme of the lens runs throughout my work almost unconsciously from the use of the lens within my photography to the independent aspect of a magnifying lens; acting as the eye of the viewer, capturing moments in time.
